Global Studies- Grade 8

As an extension of the Grade Seven Global Studies Curriculum, the students at Voice Intermediate will be uncovering further connections within the global community. Exploration will be within the cooperative framework, and independently through social studies and geographic inquiry. All curricular areas will be integrated into this unit.

Areas of Study

Economic Systems

  • Demonstrate an understanding of economic systems and the factors that influence them.
  • Identify Canada's trade relations within the global community (e.g. harvesting resources, manufacturing, goods, provision of services through the world).
  • Identify with all levels of government throughout CANADA (municipal, provincial and federal).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the electoral process

Patterns of Human Geography

  • How human activities are affected by patterns
  • Population distribution, population characteristics, settlement patterns and urbanization
  • Employment patterns and trends utilizing geographic representations, tools and technologies to gather process and communicate these patterns.
  • Identify types of land use
  • Mapping and globe skills

Migration

  • Identify and analyze the factors that affect migration and mobility (in present day)
  • How are different cultures affected by migration?
  • Identify the patterns and trends in migration and the affect they have on Canada.
  • Identify the components of culture that can be affected by migration.

Community Involvement

  • Community clean-up: being active members in the rejuvenation of our immediate and global communities
  • Involvement with seniors in our community: Students will visit surrounding retirement residences to learn from each other creating an open dialogues will allow students the opportunity to learn about our community's past.

Methods of Study

  • A major independent project or essay will be required
  • Debates, discussions and experimental activities will be an integral part of the geography curriculum
  • Tests and examination will be required
