French - Grade 8


The French program adheres to methods of study used in the text and workbook entitled Elans II which is divided in two parts. Each part entails four units.

Aim

Our aim at VOICE is to help our students gain an understanding of the French language through music, role play, written exercises (see below Elans II), short compositions and oral practice. We strive to speak french at all times during classes and activities.

Other subjects will be integrated into the French program such as French songs, study French personalities, and finally, students will be given the opportunity to reflect orally and in writing on philosophical issues related to global education. Throughout the school year, we will remind the students that to learn French is also to learn about various cultures.

Part I

The aim of each unit is to foster knowledge in each of the following areas:

Chapter one:

  • introducing and describing oneself orally and in writing
  • reading sightseeing pamphlets
  • asking questions when travelling (interrogative sentences).

Chapter two:

  • understanding and giving instructions.
  • exploring the components and general structure of an article in a magazine
  • describing heroic characters
  • telling stories of past events

Chapter three:

  • learning how to use verbs when explaining a sequence of actions such as those included in a recipe or scientific experiment or rules of a game
  • notifying someone of dangers
  • giving someone advice
  • conducting interviews.

Chapter four:

  • identifying and classifying different sports
  • encouraging athletes and expressing admiration towards them
  • describing sportive events and giving results

Part II

The goal is to foster knowledge in the following areas:

  • exploring musical instruments and various musical genres
  • describing a melody, recognizing themes in a song, expressing and justifying one's musical preferences.
  • exploring goods and services, advertising, consumer protection
  • comparing various products
  • expressing two ideas in a single sentence
  • describing a masterpiece
  • imagining people or places
  • identifying the content of a document.
  • review of what they have learnt throughout the year.

In each chapter of Parts I & II, they will learn new vocabulary or expressions related to the theme or topic under study.
