Theatre - Grades 7 and 8


 

The Theatre program at Voice Intermediate is dedicated to the academic study and practical application of theatre. The unique opportunity at Voice will present the study of theatrical skill in synergy with other academic study (i.e. mathematics, science, language, social studies, etc.).

Method of Instruction

Instruction entails coaching and lectures in combination with workshop sessions. These provide opportunities for practice and development of approaches and skills.

  • Understanding the elements of theatrical organization (the roles of the actor, playwright, director, stage manager, lighting, set, costume and sound designers, prop master, administrative staff-marketing)
  • Exploring the history of theatre (ancient classical contemporary - readings, acting, script analysis)
  • The evolution of theatrical architecture
  • Play writing
  • Elements of monologue, dialogue and scene writing
  • Journal - Documenting the process
  • Children's Theatre
  • World Theatre (Researching the role of theatre globally)

  • Researching, analyzing performing classical text
  • Shakespeare sonnets and plays

Practical

We will provide a practical forum where students will implement their academic study.

Performance - Acting

  • Practical course introducing basic theory and skills in acting
  • Improvisation, script analysis, characterization, scene building, elementary skills of voice and movement, belief and believability and development of stage-sense
  • Exploring Stanislaviski Method acting as an ideological basis

Design

Projects in set, lighting, sound, costume, props, creating models and designs to incorporate academic study in a practical form while integrating other disciplines such as mathematics, language, social studies and science.

Assessment

  • Established criteria for evaluating the quality of performance and academic study will be outlined for all participants. Assessment will be based on class participation, clarity of content in presentation, creativity, preparation, ability to work collaboratively, discipline, quality of research and it's application.
