The mathematics curriculum addresses all concepts in number sense and numeration; patterning and algebra; measurement; data management and probability; and geometry. These concepts are taught in isolation and made relevant through their integration into all aspects of life. Thus, the math curriculum attempts to integrate itself into all other areas of the curriculum. In the context of lessons, classroom work, and homework assignments, students will follow MATHPOWER - a text designed to help students build basic skills in all areas of mathematics.

However, mathematics will not be confined to a textbook. It cannot be learned strictly through lessons, rote, and/or though the memorization of facts. Thus, the language of mathematics acquires meaning as well as an identity in relation to real life applications. The goal of our mathematics curriculum then, is to assist students in understanding mathematics as an interconnected framework of logic that applies to the world around the student. Our goal is to balance their knowledge of basic skills with hands on activities, and through the integration of mathematics into all topics of study found in other curriculum areas.

Within this holistic, integrated model, students will engage in projects that address skills in measurement and numeration (e.g., area, perimeter, problem solving, number sense, fractions and percent). Students will estimate and create budgets needed to plan field trips. Graphs of all types will be created to display a diverse range of data (e.g., data relating to fluctuating Canadian and world patterns, population growth, personal and school issues, etc.)

To lend relevance to our mathematics program, we will gather resources from banks, home developers, newspapers, magazines, grocery stores, architecture, etc.
