History - Grade 7

Upper and Lower Canada Migration and Settlement

In studying Upper and Lower Canada in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, students will gain an understanding of life in English and French Canada (e.g., conflicts, early pioneer experiences, family life, economic and social life, growth and development of early institutions, transportation, and the emergence of towns). They will explore how migration and settlement might have affected (and influenced) an already established native community. They will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate historical information, and examine historical accounts (in film and text) for evidence of bias. Through various media (e.g.; artifacts, journals, letters, statistics, fieldtrips, interviews, original documents, maps, illustrations, print materials, videos, drama, discussions and debates) students will explore the ways in which early settlers met challenges in their new land.

The past however, will not be seen as disconnected from the present, nor will the present be seen as irrelevant to the future. The goal will be to analyze Ontario's and Quebec's historical development not only through the tools listed above, but also through present data found in these provinces. Thus, an understanding of our current conditions (social, economic, environmental and political) will lead students to uncover the past, envision probable and preferred futures, and formulate ways of becoming 'change agents' to create better possibilities for our community in years to come.
