Welcome to the beginning of our 2002-2003 academic year!

Most correspondence will be sent to you via e-mail, as we continue with our goal to become a "paperless" school. Newsletters are sent any time between Saturday and Tuesday of each week. Check your e-mail often, as news may be sent to you at other times throughout the week.

Welcome Meeting

Our Welcome Meeting for parents and students takes place at Ashbridges Bay clubhouse on Friday, September 9 from 6-8pm. Come out and meet new teachers, students and parents and sign up for committees. Find out about school events, sports programs, after school clubs and important news related to our upcoming year. To make our evening more enjoyable, we are asking our grade 7 parents to contribute with finger foods, our grade 8 parents to contribute with deserts, and our grade 6 parents to bring the drinks. The school will contribute a bit of everything. The clubhouse is located at the bottom of Coxwell (at Lakeshore). Look for a grey building located at your right immediately south of Lakeshore at Coxwell. Signs will be posted and parking is available in the rear parking lot of the building.

News.....................

The summer brought us many opportunities for growth. The most significant development is the addition of a grade six class. Six grade 6 students will be joining us in September, and we are excited about the possibilities and gifts that our youngest class will bring to V.I.S. In addition, our grade 8 class has grown from seven to eleven students. Because we have limited the enrollment in grade 7 to fifteen students, our overall number of students remains low. While we had twenty seven students last year, we have only increased this number by five students. However, to accommodate for growing enrollment, we have made significant improvements to our building. We have maximized the space in the lounge by moving the lockers to the basement. This move will hopefully create less traffic throughout the school, and allow for the addition of a classroom where the lounge used to be. Other improvements include many cosmetic changes to the interior of our building which are sure to please those who spend all day at school.

Welcome or Welcome Back - Voice Staff!

Textbooks and Uniforms

Textbooks and uniforms were ordered during the summer, and are due to arrive at the school during the first week or school. Nadine Gutmann has decided not to use the Elans series as indicated in your textbook list; instead she has opted to use materials from various sources at no cost to you. Don't cheer yet! I have replaced the French text with a new Language book, but this text is less costly than the Elans. In addition, the Grammar workbook originally mentioned on your list has been substituted with another I feel is more suitable. Once we have established exact costs (mid next week), the school will invoice you. Upon receipt of payment, each student will receive texts and uniform.

Safe Arrival

Voice upholds a strict "Safe Arrival" policy. It is the responsibility of each parent or guardian to call the school each morning of the day that their child will be late or absent.

Permission Forms

Permission forms (sent in your post enrollment package) are due on the first day of school. Students will not be permitted to leave the school during lunchtime, unless the permission form has been signed and returned to the school.

Tuition

If you have not done so yet, please submit your Option Payment form to the school before September 5th. For accounting purposes, we appreciate post dated cheques in accordance to the payment option you have chosen; e.g., Option A, B or C.

Gym, Dance, Theatre and Music at Bellefair

Students are to go directly to Bellefair Church each Wednesday morning. They are expected to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 am. For Gym and Dance, I have been reminded by Ms. Nicole and Ms. Launay that clothing must be comfortable and suitable for exercise. Clothing with buttons or zippers is not permitted. Following the morning program, students must return to the school by 1:00 pm. The uniform must be worn each Wednesday afternoon. Students who have not been granted permission to leave the school during lunch time will require a permission letter allowing them to walk to the school from Bellefair. An informal letter from you (for the 2002-03 academic year) will be sufficient. Students not allowed to return on their own (or in groups) will be accompanied back to the school by a teacher.

Remember that V.I.S strives to be a community of students, parents and teachers. Your involvement is essential, valuable and appreciated. Never hesitate to visit, or to contact us with concerns, questions or ideas. Let's work together to make the upcoming academic year the best it can be!
