Notice from Kathleen Martin - Fundraising Committee
The Fundraising Committee has two events planned for the new year. One event is a Dance-a-Thon on January 22, 2003. The students will participate in two hours of non-stop dancing to help raise funds to support our extra-curricular sports program and video library. Pledge forms will be sent home oven the holidays. We hope that each student can collect at least $50 in pledges.
We need a parent(s) to assist the students in producing dance tapes and/or organizing the music for the dance-a thon. If you can assist, please call Kathleen Martin at 416-691-4702/ 416 979-6408.
A second event planned is an evening a Yuk Yuk's Comedy Cabaret on February 19, 2003. We will be selling tickets; a percentage of which will go to assist the school with funds for extra-curricular sports, the library and on going professional development of the teachers. The evening promises to be an enjoyable night out with Voice families and friends. Please be sure to mark February 19, 2003 on your calendar. We will follow up with ticket details in the new year.
Skating Event - January 11, 2003
The Social Committee has booked Kew Gardens Outdoor Arena for a skating event involving students, friends and parents. An information sheet went home with students last week. The arena has been booked from 1-2 pm. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Kawartha - January 13-15, 2003
Just in case you have not yet visited Camp Kawartha's site at www.campkawartha.ca , I am including a brief description of the program we have selected for our students. All students have brought home information and forms necessary to participate in the trip. All forms and payment for the trip are due back to the school by January 8, 2003.
Fur Trade Game (This is a 2 ½ day program)
Bring history to life for your students by having them participate in a simulated historical fur-trade from the late 1700's. A wonderful learning opportunity that leaves textbooks and overheads far behind as students re-enact an exchange of trade goods and fur between "Les Bourgeois", working for the North West Company and the Native peoples of Northern Ontario. Students outfit themselves with "trade goods" and they must barter these goods for "fur." In this game students learn about the differing social, cultural and economic approaches to trade by Europeans and Indigenous people. This is a remarkable program that involves role-playing, strategic thinking, planning and teamwork. Our site has a log trading post outfitted with replicas of many of the trade goods used in the fur trade.
Our thanks go out to.....
Note: Fundraising is a necessary function at V.I.S as we attempt to keep tuition cost at a minimum, and must compensate with additional funds to enrich our existing programs and offer new ones. The ongoing support of all parents at V.I.S. is greatly appreciated.
