Fall Fair

Cathie Webb and all our students have begun preparations for our annual Fall Fair. This year, it will be held in the afternoon of October 29 from 1:30 to 3:30pm. Fall Fair turned out to be an exciting event last year and we will be sure to have a fantastic time for the second year in a row. There will be games, activities, prizes and much more. Parent photographers and volunteers are needed. In any case, be sure to visit the school that afternoon and take part in our activities.

Hallowe'en Dance

Our Hallowe'en dance will be held on the evening of October 29 from 7 to 9 pm at the school. Costumes are mandatory! Everyone is asked to bring hollowe'en snacks or drinks to share. Each student is allowed to bring one guest.

Hep B Vaccine

As you know, the Public Health nurse visited on Tuesday to inform our grade 7 students about the benefits of the Hep B vaccine. By now, grade seven parents should have received information sheets and permission forms needed to administer the vaccine. Public Health needs the forms, so we are asking you to return them promptly. There is a cost of $150 to administer the vaccine at any Public Health Clinic. There is no cost when administered through the school. Vaccination Date: December 17 pm.

Mock Debate - Read all About It

I know that our students, parents, media and candidates for the Beaches- East York riding will agree that our Mock Debate was a tremendous success! Do I have any doubts that one of our kids will become one of Canada's Prime Ministers? NO!

It turned out that our kids were so informed about current political platforms, issues, controversies, current promises, failed promises, and about conduct in political debates, that even the candidates wanted to steal their speeches and approaches. Seriously! What a show of knowledge and confidence!

Thank you Mr. Taylor for this activity. A great learning opportunity for our students and a reminder to all adults out there that kids can achieve anything given the opportunities and the right environment. Look out for photos or an article in the next issue of the Beach Metro.

"Scientifically Speaking"

Well, our science program is off to a great start. The students are definitely curious keen learners, the true markings of fine young scientists!

Over the next while the grade 7's will be examining various ecosystems and the animal kingdom. This afternoon our grade 7s headed over to "The Zoo in the Beach", a local pet store, where we closely examined, compared and classified a wide assortment of living creatures. The students were researching means of adaptation and how living things survive in their natural habitats. Throughout the term, our personal and communal responsibility to all living things on our planet will be emphasized.

Grade 8 parents, ask your sons and daughters to show you how a single drop of water can serve as a perfect magnifying glass! Yes, the grade 8's have been busy exploring the concept of magnification and the influence that microscopy has had on our lives! Using clear marbles for lenses, each student had the opportunity to make their own version of a 1674 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek microscope! Using lab microscopes, the students have begun to investigate the micro world of unicellular and multicellular organisms, as well as plant and animal cells! We're having loads of "eye-opening" fun!

As always, if you have any science ideas or resources that you'd like to share, feel welcome to be in touch!

Yours, Scientifically Speaking!
