Kids Can Free the Children Fundraiser
by: Mr. Taylor
As I am sure you have heard, on Friday November 28th our students will be spending 24 hours at V.I.S. to raise funds for Kids Can Free the Children. The idea for the project stemmed from a class discussion about action that could be taken to advocate the rights of children in other parts of the world.
Kids Can Free the Children, with the help of many, has built 300 schools in poor communities in the developing world. Currently the organization is working on building schools in China, Kenya, Ecuador and Sierra Leone. As a result of this fundraiser, we are hoping to have the opportunity to name a school currently under construction. Most important, we feel that the project will empower our students to believe that they can indeed take action and make a difference.
The 24 hour sleep over will begin at 6pm on Friday November 28th, 2003. The students are asked to return to the school by 5:30pm that day. We will be watching movies, doing homework, reading, playing games, and listening to a local musician as well as to guest speaker Arielle Kieran (a major contributor to the cause of children's rights and Kids Can Free the Children).
We have been organizing potluck meals for our 24-hour stay at the school. A letter will be going home early this week indicating what students should bring (sleeping bag, teddy bear etc.). The event will end at 6pm on Saturday November 29th, 2003. Please send a note indicating if your child can leave on his/her own following the event. Thank you for all of your efforts and support.
Our target is $2500 and if achieved, I have promised to wear a dress from Bellefair to V.I.S on the following Wednesday. My target is $2499.99. Please note that pledge forms were sent home last week. We are still looking for a couple parent volunteers. If you are able to chaperone for all or a portion of this event please contact the school.
Thank you,
Paul Taylor

Beach Youth Alliance
Lynn Kieran has come up with a great idea about the issue of adult perception toward youth in the area (especially on Queen St). The students of V.I.S. will be forming the "Beach Youth Alliance". It will be a co-ed group of students in grades 7 and 8 from "all" intermediate (public and private) schools in the Beaches, who might be interested in working together to change the overall negative perception of teens in this area.
Our first meeting will be held on: Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Voice Intermediate School from 4-5:30pm.
The Beach Youth Alliance will be sponsored by V.I.S.
Thank You
Sean Kieran
Support Group On its Way
We have come up with the idea that this year's grade 8s who are going to Malvern next year could form a support group[ to make sure we remain friends. This possibility will be discussed at the next student council meeting on Monday, November 24 at 3:30pm.
Parents: The Student Council welcomes ideas from you about any issue and anytime.
Reminder
No one really has been contributing to the C.S.C- Concerned Student Committee. I just want to inform parents that the opportunity to express concerns is there for students and for everyone. Concerns should be expressed in writing and put in the box found in the Homework Area. These concerns will be looked at all Student Council meetings.
