Curriculum Night

We have received very positive feedback from several parents about Curriculum Night. Many of you commented on the quality of the work presented, the positive energy in the school, and the value of a program that places the Ontario Curriculum (academics) in a creative, relevant context. I am very proud of the efforts that our teachers and students have made thus far, and I feel that there was evidence of many accomplishments. I thank those of you who continually work with the school in positive ways. Our learning environment, our teachers' efforts and your child's progress will continue to flourish if we can achieve a "balance" of constructive criticism and praise.

Photos

A reminder to parents that the deadline for photo orders was Monday, November 10th. Doreen Dotto was able to waive the late fee if orders came in by the end of last week. She is asking for any other orders to come in as soon as possible, given that her deadline to process and deliver photos is fast approaching.

Quebec

Our trip to Quebec turned out to be a fantastic learning experience! We thank Keeting tours, our guide Christine, Don our bus driver, and parents Geoff Vernon, Cynthia Gunn, Judy Kalyan, Tom Rothfels and Sue Brophy for chaperoning. Teachers Cathy Wilson and Cathie Webb did a great job with ongoing supervision. I had a great holiday. Fabulous!

On Tuesday, November 11, the VIS Girls Basketball team played their final regular season game at Willow Wood. Needing a win to secure the final playoff spot in the SSAF league finals, the team overcame a slow start to rally in the second half and come away with a convincing 32-10 victory. The win exemplified the team's commitment to defence and instilled a sense of self confidence after some tough losses and a long layoff between games. Balanced scoring was also a key to the win with Caillie, Sidey, Rebecca, Alison, Beth and Mimi all scoring baskets.

On Thursday, November 13, VIS travelled to Crestwood Preparatory College to take on the first place Crestwood Lions in the semi final playoff game. Facing a team that had only lost one game all season (and that game by 1 point), VIS brought their best game and provided a thrilling ending to an outstanding basketball match. In a tight defensive first half, VIS trailed by a basket. Crestwood roared out to a 16-8 lead early in the fourth quarter. That was when the VIS squad put on an incredible display of focus and determination. demonstrating a cohesive team effort on defence that has earned them the nickname of the Mean Green Fighting Machine. They held the hosts off the scoreboard for nearly 5 minutes while engineering a comeback drive led by Sidey's 9 point run of unanswered baskets to take a 17-16 lead that stunned the home crowd with less than thirty seconds remaining. The final thirty seconds with both teams calling time outs resulted in Crestwood scoring to win the game 18-17 and advance to the league finals.

Congratulations to the Girls Basketball team on an amazing run and a magical season capped off by a thrilling playoff game. It has been an honour and a pleasure to coach such a dedicated and passionate team.

Special thanks to our drivers Geoffrey Vernon, Brad Gerster and Lorraine Deska. Thank you also to Dylan and Tyler - our cheerleaders.
