V.I.S. Newsletter

June 4, 2004

by: Marie Lardino

To our "new" grade 6, 7 and 8 students and their parents, we extend an invitation to our upcomingperformance and welcome you formally to our Newsletter

Theatre, Music, Dance

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to… Get up every morning with the intention of trying to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes? Find a different person everyday and try to put yourself in their situation whether it is a family member or a complete stranger.

Learn what it really means to have compassion for the person standing next to you. How much time would that really take?

(An excerpt from "Walk a Mile")

Well, summer is finally here and it is not just the flowers that are in bloom! Colourful ideas are popping up all over the place! The Students at Voice are at it again! We have worked hard to create our final performance for the year. "Walk a Mile" as it is being called; a collage heme using dance, music, poetry, famous quotes, monologues and scenes (found and original) by the VIS ensemble.

The performance is scheduled on Tuesday, June 8th, 2004 @ 7:30 in the Sanctuary at Bellefair United Church. We are so excited!

We'll see you there.

50/50 Raffle

Don't forget our 50/50 Raffle that will take place on the night of our performance on Tuesday, June 8. Tickets are $1 each, 3 for $5 or an arm’s length for $10. Tickets available at the Play. Minimum donation to "Walk a Mile" will be $5 at the door!! All proceeds go to the Grade 8 Graduation Celebration

News About Our Teachers

At this time we regret saying good bye to Gina Li who leaves us to pursue other teaching possibilities in other schools. Gina, we thank you for your patience, your perseverance and for the endless effort you have put into your program each and every day. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours and are sad to lose you!

Simmy Zaret our science teacher leaves us as well; and with her, goes the "magic" that all scientific experiments have become around here! But hold on.....Simmy will be here next year to give us advice and assist us in the planning of yet another exciting science program (led by Christine Tulloch). So, we may be losing her as a teacher, but her ideas and creativity will still be around. What a relief! Simmy and Gina, we will miss you both!

Welcome Christine Tulloch

Christine comes to us from the Yorkland School where she presently teaches grade 7 English. She holds a B.A and a B.Ed., with Junior/ Intermediate qualifications in English and Senior qualifications in History. Christine is joining us full time to teach a variety of subjects in grades 6, 7 and 8. Having a strong background in History, Christine led the tour to Quebec City this year, leaving us with valuable information and enlightening everyone with her creative teaching style.

We are delighted and feel very fortunate to welcome Christine in the upcoming academic year.

Please contact the school on these days, should you have concerns and/or want discuss your child's grades with a specific teacher(s). We will return your call.

Junior Achievement Workshop

Thank you in advance to Jon Kieran who will be coming to V.I.S. on Monday, June 7 to conduct the Economics of Staying in School Workshop (ESIS) with our grade 8 class. The workshop will take place all day, and addresses future "career goals", the meaning of "success" and "budgeting" in relation to post secondary education and to living independently in the future. The workshop entails, cost of living exercises, a success game, discussions, and much more. Jon came in last year as well to conduct this workshop, leaving the kids with an unforgettable learning experience and invaluable, practical information.

Note: Grade 7 classes will take place as usual.

Uniforms

Parents: Uniform rules will be tougher next academic year. We will be insisting on a consistently clean uniform and the V.I.S t-shirt (with our logo only) will be required. Students not wearing the proper uniform will be warned once, and then asked to go home and change. The same rule will apply to our gym uniform. Please read the "Dress Code" section in the 2004-2005 package very carefully.

May I suggest that if you need additional t-shirts and/or other uniform pieces, that you order them ASAP. Marissa will be available Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12 pm to take orders. The orders must be sent in before June 20. Michael at Karsuh Activewear informs me that it will not be possible to order t-shirts and sweats after that date.

Note to New Parents!!!

Please check post enrolment packages carefully to ensure that required forms are brought to us prior to the first day of school. Ms. Fortuno and I will be here during the last week of August to answer questions and accept forms. In addition, we will be checking for messages on a weekly basis and will answer questions and address concerns as they arise during the summer.

Textbook Sales

Students will be able to sell their used texbooks back to the school on Monday and Tuesday. A cheque from the school will be sent home but will be postdated for September 2. May we suggest that students donate books that are 3 years old or older. We will not resell these; however, they can be used next year as refernce materials, etc.

Yearbooks

Our yearbooks will be distributed on the last day of school to students who want to purchase them. The price of the yearbook is $ 20 --and it will be well worth it . A very special thanks to Heidi Mc Kay and Judy Kalyan for taking on such an enormous job. They have spent long hours and many consecutive nights working on this project.

Thank you to Cathie Webb for assisting as well. This year's Yearbook looks fantastic!
